How to install ZenCart: Part III

For this tutorial it is recommended that you are connected to the Internet, browsing the internet with Firefox and have FileZilla installed.

Once you have finished uploading the files, open your internet browser to finish the install. Type in http://www.YOURDOMAIN.com/FOLDERNAME/zc_install/

PLEASE make sure you replace YOURDOMAIN with your actual domain name. Also change FOLDERNAME to whatever you named the folder you uploaded ZenCart to.

This page should now appear in your browser:

Click on the “Continue” button.

You will now to read and click to agree to the terms of use. After you have checked the box to agree, click on the “Continue” button:

Most likely, a page will appear instructing you to edit the permissions on certain files and folders. Every web host handles permissions differently. Please contact yours directly for help with this step (I may in the future create a tutorial for this). Once you have the permissions set, click on the “Re-check” button. If no further errors or issues appear, you can click on the “Install” button to continue.

The next page will need to have certain variables edited:

The first section is the Database Information. You will need the following:

  1. Database Host (usually localhost)
  2. Database Username
  3. Database Password
  4. Database Name

If you do not have this information, please contact your web host directly.

Editing the second section is optional. I recommended leaving it as is.

Once you have finished editing these sections, click on the “Save Database Settings” button to continue with the installation.

The next page will verify your basic store settings. Unless you have already installed an SSL certificate, you most likely do not need to edit these settings.

Click on the “Save System Settings” button to finish the installation.

The next page will ask you about phpbb – if you do not have this installed, just ignore this page and continue on. If you do have phpbb installed, enter in the URL to your forums on this page before continuing.

The next page asks for your store name, your email address, address and similar. You do not have to fill in all of this information, it can always be added and/or edited in the future. You are required to fill in store name, owner and email address before you can click the “Save Store Settings” button to continue.

The final page allows you to set a username and password for the admin area. You will need to enter your desired username, password and email address. You can also to check to have the cart detect when a newer version of ZenCart is available to download and install. Once finished, click on “Save Admin Settings”

After a few seconds (more or less depending upon your web host) you should see this screen appear:

Congratulations! ZenCart is now installed and ready for you to use.

Before you start adding products, you will need to delete the zc_install folder (either using your FTP program or in your web hosting control panel) and also change the permissions on the two configure.php files.

  3. Hi Jess, it is very easy to install a template/theme for ZenCart. You simply upload the template folder and then activate it in your admin area. I am working on a tutorial for it right now. I will have it up by tomorrow.
