Before we finish the upgrade, it is very important that you back up your current WordPress files. That way, should anything go wrong with the upgrade, you can restore the backup until you figure out what went wrong. Most web hosts provide a website backup tool, contact your host if you are unsure of how to make a backup.

Once you have your back up created, you can finish the upgrade. To do so, you will need the following:

An FTP program (I like FileZilla and will be using it in this tutorial)

Your FTP information as provided by your web host (this is usually yourdomain.com or ftp.yourdomain.com, your username and a password)

Open your FTP program and connect to your domain using your FTP information.

You will be replacing your current wp-admin and wp-includes folders and all of their contents.

Delete your current wp-admin and wp-includes folders

Move over the wp-admin and wp-includes folders we unzipped earlier

Move over all of the files in main wordpress folder – overwriting the current files

IMPORTANT: Do not overwrite the wp-configure.php file.

Once you have finished, open your browser and type in:

http://www.YOURDOMAIN.com/WORDPRESSFOLDER/wp-admin

PLEASE make sure you replace YOURDOMAIN and WORDPRESSFOLDER with your actual information!

You should see this page:

Click on “Upgrade WordPress” to continue.

After a few seconds, you will see this page:

Click on “Continue” to complete the upgrade.

That’s it!

WordPress has now been upgraded to 2.7.

Upgrading your current version of WordPress may seem intimidating, but it’s actually a very simple process.

For this tutorial it is recommended that you are connected to the Internet, browsing the internet with Firefox and have FileZilla installed.

First, you will need to visit the WordPress website (http://www.wordpress.org) to download the script files. When you get to their main page, click on one of the two download buttons as illustrated below.

When the download page opens, click on the download button as shown below. I recommend downloading the script as a .zip file. You can download it as a .tar file, however this tutorial will be specific to the zip file.

A new box should open as seen below. Please select “Save to Disk” and then click on the “OK” button.

Once the file has finished downloading, you need to open the file you just saved. Usually, your computer will automatically save the file to your desktop. If you saved the file elsewhere, you will need to go to that location to open it. Once you find the file, double-click (click twice) on the file icon to open it.

A new box should open in your window as shown below. Because the file we saved was a .zip file (this is a compressed file – which makes it faster to download), we now need to “unzip” it.

First, click on the file name (it should be wordpress) one time with your mouse. Now, double-click the words “Extract all files” and a new window will (again) open:

For this tutorial, I will be extracting the files to my desktop. If you choose to extract the files to another location on your computer, please remember where you saved them to for later! Once you have your location chosen in the circled box above, click on the “Extract” button.

Your computer will then extract the zipped files to your specified location.

You are now ready to move these files to your web host and finish the upgrade.

For this tutorial it is recommended that you are connected to the Internet, browsing the internet with Firefox and have FileZilla installed.

Now that we have the files unzipped and edited, we can move onto uploading them to your web host.

To do this, you will need the following:

An FTP program (I like FileZilla – see my tutorials for it here)

Your FTP information as provided by your web host (this is usually yourdomain.com or ftp.yourdomain.com, your username and a password)

Open your FTP program (I will be using FileZilla for this tutorial) and connect to your domain using your FTP information.

To the top left side, find your WordPress files listed under Desktop:

To the top right side, open up your website to the folder you wish to upload WordPress to. cPanel users, first double-click on the folder public_html and then open the folder you want to upload the files to (example: /blog/).

Once you have all the folders open, you will want to move the WordPress files on your computer to your web host.

First, in the bottom left box, highlight all the WordPress folders and files by clicking on the top folder displayed once and then holding the “ctrl” and “shift” keys clicking on the last file displayed (see below).

Now, hold down your mouse on the left side and DRAG these files over to the bottom right side, into the folder you have opened on your web host.

FileZilla will start moving the files over automatically. If you do not see this happening, first check to see if the files to the left are still highlighted. If they are, attempt top drag them over again. If they are NOT highlighted or you cannot get your files to drag over, please contact me for further help.

Once the files are finished uploading, open your internet browser to finish the install. Type in http://www.YOURDOMAIN.com/wp-admin/install.php

PLEASE make sure you replace YOURDOMAIN with your actual domain name!

This page should now appear in your browser:

Enter in a title for your blog (you can change this later) and also your email address. Then click on the “Install WordPress” button.

After a few seconds (more or less depending upon your web host) you should see this screen appear.

Success! WordPress is now installed and ready for you to use.

Make sure you keep a copy of your username and password for future use.

For this tutorial it is recommended that you are connected to the Internet, browsing the internet with Firefox and have FileZilla installed.

Installing WordPress can be fast and painless, just follow these simple steps

First, you will need to visit the WordPress website (http://www.wordpress.org) to download the script files. When you get to their main page, click on one of the two download buttons as illustrated below.

You will arrive at their download page. Click again on the download button as shown below. I recommend downloading the script as a .zip file. You can download it as a .tar file, however this tutorial will be specific to the zip file.

A new box should open on your screen as seen below.

Now, double-click the words “Extract all files”

A new window will (again) open:

For this tutorial, I will be extracting the files to my desktop. If you choose to extract the files to another location on your computer, please remember where you saved them to for later! Once you have your location chosen in the circled box above, click on the “Extract” button.

Your computer will then extract the zipped files to your specified location.

We now need to edit one file before uploading so that WordPress will work on your web host server.

Open up Notepad. Click on Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Notepad.

You will need to open the wp-config-sample.php file into Notepad.

Find the following code:

define(‘DB_NAME’, ‘putyourdbnamehere‘); // The name of the database
define(‘DB_USER’, ‘usernamehere‘); // Your MySQL username
define(‘DB_PASSWORD’, ‘yourpasswordhere‘); // …and password
define(‘DB_HOST’, ‘localhost’); // 99% chance you won’t need to change this value

You will need to edit the variables I have bolded above. If you are unsure of what to put, please contact your web host first. Once you have edited these, save the file as wp-config.php and close it.

You are now ready to move these files to your web host and finish the installation.
