The Displaced Caper

Also completed this month is the re-design of The Displaced Caper. The owner had a new logo designed and I created a template to coordinate with it. I also installed Zencart and customized it to match the new template.
The Displaced Caper

This website provides information on the town the website owner lives in, so the owner needed space for affiliate links, button ads and Google Adsense for income purposes.

The client maintains this website and shopping cart herself. It may appear differently than the image displayed here. Visit the website here and the ZenCart shopping cart here.

Increasing website traffic

In the 6+ years I’ve ran my web design business, I have spent little time promoting my website. Referrals have kept me so busy that I’ve never had a need to market my website. Now that I have expanded my horizons into affiliate marketing, I have begun creating smaller sites that need traffic. I have spent lots of time promoting my client websites but now that I am working on my own - I feel stuck. How do I increase my traffic???

There are the obvious routes that always come to mind first:

  1. Link exchanges (reciprocal and one-way)
  2. Submissions to directories
  3. Article writing
  4. Pay per click advertising

Quickly losing my mind

Filed Under: Miscellaneous | Leave Comment

I have been working on a re-design for one of my main affiliate sites and am beyond ready to pull out my hair. ARGGHHH!!! The site looks perfect in IE (of course) but in Firefox? Forget it. I’ve tweaked and made edits and still no luck. I’m about ready to scrap the whole thing except that I’ve put way too much time into it.

I love the designer of the theme I am using for it, but…

I’ve had just about enough!

Hiding affiliate links

I have to admit, this is something I don’t always do. Call me lazy. It can really eat up my time having to add the cloaking code to all links I add to my sites. But I’m working to be better about it. Why should you hide your affiliate links?

The two reasons that come to mind include:

  1. Avoiding commission stealing (someone seeing the affiliate code in your link, and then opting to enter their own affiliate ID and collect the commission on their own purchase)
  2. Turning off potential clickers (would you rather click and order from this link www.domain.com or www.tracker.com/domain.com&aff=123456?)

The benefits to cloaking your links are not limited to discouraging the behaviors above. It can also save you time IF you cloak your links in a particular way. So what am I talking about? Normally, I use the following code to hide my links:

a xhref=”AFFILIATE LINK” target=”_blank” onmouseover=”window.status=‘LINK PEOPLE SEE’;return true;” onmouseout=”window.status=’ ‘;return true;”
